Black iris flower

“In reality there are no truly black flowers,” says Stefania Del Zotto at Interflora. “Most are very dark shades of purple or red.” I’m sure she’s right, but there are unusual flowers and this stunning photo by MrBrownThumb sure looks black to me!

“The bloom was supposed to be brown,” he says, “but what unfurled instead a year later after planting the rhizome was this dark purple bloom. In some lights-in particular when backlit- it really looks more purple, but when the weather is cool, rainy, and cloudy I’m presented with the black iris you see in the picture.”
