(Editor’s Note: After learning more about the repurposed animal sculptures of Eric Langert, we’re taking a look today at animal art by other artists in Swedish sculpture gardens.)

Sadly, the blog site Blue Velvet Chair is no longer active. I’m so grateful to the woman who wrote it (and sad that I don’t know her name) for cluing me into animal sculptures in Sweden.

She wrote about, and photographed, crocodile sculptures made from old car tires.

Their creator is Swedish Sculptor Eric Langert, who has turned junk — from radiators to old hockey gloves — into an exhibit of animal art that’s touring Scandinavia.

But Eric’s not alone. Here are a couple of Swedish sculpture gardens with animal sculptures by other talented artists.

Animal Sculptures at Pilane

The Pilane Sculpture Garden is one of those harder places to visit, being on an the island of Tjörn, off the west coast of Sweden. Luckily, their website has some nice photos of recent public art.

I don’t read Swedish, so I may be missing the artist for this rabbit sculpture. But whoever created it, the work has such beautiful, simple lines and such a graceful shape…

Here’s a different rabbit sculpture that was in 2012. Called “Giant Aid Rabbit”, it’s by sculptor Kent Karlsson and wears the Red Cross symbol on its ears…

After our recent garden post about How to Control the Tomato Hornworm, this caterpillar sculpture is a nice reminder. There are many caterpillars we want in our gardens (like the Monarch).

These sheep are not sculptures, but the phone booth is…

The Scupture Garden at Ängelsberg

The Ängelsberg (Engelsberg) Sculpture Garden is also a challenging place to visit, located roughly in the center of Sweden. As with Pilane, the Ängelsberg website has lots of images.

I’m not sure what kind of birds this sculpture represents. My co-worker, Deanna, thought they might be cranes. If you know, please feel free to comment below! Whatever they are, they strike a bold profile in the park…

You thought there were no gorillas in Sweden? My thought on seeing this sculpture was that gorillas are social animals, so surely there must be more nearby…

Stylized Gorilla Sculpture: Ängelsberg Sculpture Park

Sure enough, there was another gorilla sculpture — although this one is less stylized, more realistic, and perhaps more brooding…

Finally, here is one of Eric Langert’s crocodiles, resting on a rock in the park.
