My jaw dropped open when I saw this image and accompanying story by Rachel at intralld.com. (While the site focuses on interior design, it aims to “enthrall” people with miracles in all kinds of architecture, including the outdoors.) Even though I live in Michigan, I immediately wanted to board a plane and travel to San Francisco to climb the stairs myself.

“This amazingly detailed mosaic set of 163 steps,” Rachel says of this San Francisco staircase, “is covered with beautifully patterned tiles… with the help of more than 300 local neighbors.”

The steps, she adds, were a beautification project by the San Francisco Parks Trust. I think they show how decorating “ordinary” outdoor spaces makes our world a better, more joyful place. What do you think? Have you and your neighbors completed an outdoor community project you’re proud of?
