National Parks: Yellowstone's North Entrance - Roosevelt's Quote

Yellowstone’s Roosevelt Arch

The United States has 59 national parks. They range from Acadia to Zion. They’re in 27 states (plus American Samoa and the Virgin Islands).

And they’re stunning places to visit.

Yellowstone, created in 1872, was the first national park in the world! Now there are national parks in more than 100 countries on six continents.

If it weren’t for our 26th president, Theodore Roosevelt, we wouldn’t be celebrating National Parks Week. Sickly as a child, Roosevelt grew up to embrace the great outdoors.

He became a hunter and a nature lover. While president, he worked hard to expand the national park system.

During a trip to Yellowstone, he said the parks were made “for the benefit and enjoyment of the people.” These words were later carved at Yellowstone’s north entrance.

I don’t think he’d have imagined his legacy. Millions of people “enjoy” the parks each year.
