Two years ago, an earthquake devastated much of Christchurch, New Zealand’s 3rd-largest city.

Since then, Foreign Policy Magazine has named it a global city that will shape the next century. “A massive rebuilding effort,” says Harvard economist Edward Glaeser, “is a unique opportunity to rethink urban form.”

The city council is planning high-tech, sustainable development to make a “city in a garden.”  Lots of parks and other more innovative measures are on their agenda. Mayor Bob Parker noted that “This is a chance to seize the moment.”
